Mass ascension: photographing hundreds of balloons before breakfast
A field note on the ground preparation for the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta: why the launch happens at dawn, what cold air does to camera gear, and which session repays the 4 a.m. alarm.
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta sends several hundred balloons up in a single dawn window because that is when the air cooperates: cold, dense and still, before the sun has heated the ground into thermals. For a photographer the practical consequences are a 4 a.m. alarm, a field full of spectators in the dark, and gear that has been sitting in a cold car or on cold ground. The session is over before the light most people would call good begins.

Why do the balloons launch so early?
A hot air balloon flies on a temperature difference between the envelope and the air outside it. Cold dawn air is dense, so each burner blast buys more lift; and before sunrise the ground is not yet shedding the thermals that make midday air turbulent and unpredictable. The launch window is therefore the calm window, and it closes when the sun gets to work on the ground.
Albuquerque adds a local gift called the box: a recurring wind pattern in which the surface flow and the flow a few hundred feet up run in different directions, so a pilot can climb, drift out, change altitude and return near the launch field. What does cold dawn air do to your gear?
Two mundane effects and one that is often misunderstood. Batteries sag in the cold, so the spares live in an inside pocket until they are needed. Hands matter more than cameras: gloves thin enough to work a shutter are worth more than any bag. And the condensation rule runs the opposite way from the one people expect. Taking warm gear into cold dry air fogs nothing; the fogging happens later, when cold kit is carried back into a warm car or room. Bag the camera before re-entry so moisture condenses on the bag rather than on the sensor and the mirror.

Which session is worth the 4 a.m. alarm?
The morning session, and specifically the dawn patrol that precedes it: a handful of balloons launch in the dark to test the air, and their burners are the best light the field offers all day. The evening glow is a static display, beautiful and motionless; the mass ascension is several hundred envelopes inflating in the dark and lifting in waves. If one alarm justifies the trip, it is that one.
One constraint sits on top of all of it for readers of this site: during the event the field is a controlled volume for crewed balloons, and unmanned aircraft are not part of the picture. And the still cold hour that makes the launch possible is the same hour that does a different job over water, where reading a lagoon from the air trades the calm window for colour instead of lift.
Preparation for the day is therefore simple and mostly done the night before: charge everything, bag the cold gear, know which session you are actually there for, and be on the field while it is still dark.
